Working title: I am Jane Flynn
“I am Jane Flynn” is the development of a new theatre piece, based on the life of 19th century Irish immigrant Jane Flynn. The work will explore themes of memory, mental health and identity. Haynes originally researched and created Jane in 2016 at Black Creek Pioneer Village to teach visitors at the museum about immigration and women’s roles in the early days of Canada. Taylor played the role in 2018, and both became fascinated by the real woman the character was based on.
Jane Flynn wasn’t famous. She wasn’t a leader of a movement; she didn’t invent anything. She was just an ordinary a woman who flew in the face of prescribed feminine roles in ordinary every day ways. We owe it to Jane to finish her story.
A workshop reading of the first draft will take place in late May of 2020. Watch this space for updates!
